Curiosity

What is it that makes CRers and other life extension supporters different in their determination and ability to do CR. After watching the long documentary on Aubrey De Grey and his SENS project, it was obvious that the people who support this have a curiosity about them, they are optimistic people as Christopher sykes said. Some people only tend to see the bad things and ignore the good things in life. How sad! Some people say how i'm wasting my time with all this nutrition and CR stuff, but i'm in a constant fight against aging, and there is only one shot at getting this right. If I fail then at least I tried to make it. Everyone has a goal in life right? My goal is to explore the universe, yes far out, but impossible? I don't think so. So I can do long term CR because my reasons for doing it isn't for weight loss or something stupid, it's about life and death, seeing the future or not.

April and Michael were in the Channel 4 documentary by the way... only around 2-3 minutes, but pretty cool. This was obviously broadcasted into millions of peoples homes on the saturday. So lots of people learned about CR, Aubrey De Grey, Cryonics and other things. When they showed the monkeys at the primate centre it was amazing the difference between the CR monkey and Ad lib monkey, the CR'd one looked very young for his age, no wrinkles. Then you looked at the monkey on ad lib and you could see all the skin creases above his eyes, he just looked very old in comparison (yet only 1 year older).

The documentary really left me more sympathetic to aubreys goals, he's obviously working extremely hard to get this Mprize and SENS recognised, it would be great if there were more in the field that would help rather than criticize. He must get so tired travelling all over the place!

Very well done documentary anyway... I recorded it on DVD and I think running time 76 minutes

I think you're right about the curiosity thing. I'd love to explore the universe too, though I think you'll have a much greater chance of it than I will.

I wish I could see that documentary.. let us know when a feed is available.. or, alternately, if you decide to seed it via bittorrent, let us know (give us a link to the torrent) :)

Ouch! That hurt- you write: my reasons for doing [CR] isn't for weight loss or something stupid.

I'm doing CRON for the initial weight loss as well as health, vitality, the myriad other benefits as well as longevity. It seems to me that people feel honest when make remarks lamenting the sadness of people being overweight, and honest when they lament the sadness of people purposefully shedding weight... But what about the sadness of the contradictions in thinking of people who don't want others to be overweight or care about weight, or shed weight on purpose!

Just exasperated because often you post about others being overweight- and I just felt like you were now disassociating yourself from believing in the value of weight loss in this post... And although I know you're talking about your own personal motivations for doing CR (and weight loss, as you have mentioned has never been an issue for you)- I hope that you realize that just because weight loss isn't a motivator for you to do CR, you may want to reconsider if you really think it's a sad part(!)-motivator for others of us to do CR!

I didn't mean that weight loss is stupid... I said "or other stupid things". Which I never actually defined, and stupid reasons for me might not be so stupid for others. Obviously. Weight loss is important for most people, but for the 95% of dieters they aren't able to keep up a strict diet... so you need to believe in something, have some sort of strong goal that will enable you to do CR for decades.

For example, if I was religious then I may have actually not done CR, because life would go on after my death. But being simply an athiest or agnostic is something that pushes me towards CR.

Everyone faces life and death when it comes to weight, as being obese will kill you rather quick! But most want to lose weight for cosmetic and appearance changes, health is just a side issue in some cases (not for all of course). Is this a strong enough reason to do CR for 80 years?

I think if you look at the CR community, you see that most are interested in Sci-Fi, the universe, technology and the future. They've read books on A.I/robotics/cyborgs, the singularity, nano tech revolution and all sorts of radical things. They want to be part of a future, that 90% of the population are probably oblivious to.

I think its your life goals or what you want to achieve (that you havent got enough time for) that will drive your ability to carry out life long CR without any probleme.

I could be talking complete rubbish, I don't know. Its just an opinion and I hope no one is offended by it.

Although you do know that ob/ob mice when put on CR (and are still fat) end up living longer than skinny rodents not CR'd? So really, CR is nothing to do with weight.
