This can come up a lot when the average westener confronts a serious CRONie. Girls tend to get away with it easier than guys, but not always. We're always seeing the media bash celebrities for being too skinny, then when they have their personal nutritionists and trainers get them in shape the media bash them for being too skinny. Then it's not always the media that are against it, even now the general public are unfortunately 'accepting' overweight as being normal. I don't just mean normal, I mean in recent years the average weight has gone up so much that our perception of what is a normal weight has completely changed. This is even backed up by some science that was reported over the last few years.
Now we have to be honest, serious anti aging kind of CR is for those that wish to take part in some experiment that we may never know the results. However, the whole country could use some CR right now. We should not expect everyone to jump onto CR and go into moderate to severe CR, but even milder reductions would signifiant improve health, work productivity, education, relationships and take a huge amount of strain off of free health services like the NHS here in the UK (which by the way I think do a brilliant job and i'm so greatful to have free health care in my country!) Diseases that are on the rise are perfectly preventable, such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and most cancers. Even other mild problems like common allergies such as hay fever can be reduced by a better diet. I used to have severe hay fever for 6 years, and since CR it's 99% better. The odd couple days in the summer I have symptoms but thats about it!
As readers come across my blog they might think this life style is 'extreme'. It can be, but it can also help you maintain a normal weight at the low end of normal and have a huge benefit of preventing diseases so that you're living most of your life disease free, much like those okinawans who were mildly calorie restricted for half their adult lives.
Since I began CR the issue of weight has come up over and over again. Questions are usually raised in the first few months of your weight where people around you need time to adjust to your new weight. There have been many reports among those on CR that during the early phase of weight loss people have made negative comments, and even when they're within a perfectly normal BMI. This comes back to how peoples perception of what is normal has changed.
If at some point the 'magic pill' comes along where it gives all the benefits of CR without actually doing serious CR then I would take it, and I would definitely gain about 10-15 pounds of weight back. I have always been lean all my life, ever since I was kid.
There is no denying that many of us on CR are freakishly skinny, and without proper care of nutrition, frequent lab work and other monitoring it can be a bit risky... if not done right you should consider quitting CR and just eating a healthy diet with increased calories.
Since the new research has come out theres been far more interest than usual in CR. We now have a wider age range in those that are on CRON. Many years ago people who were middle aged were typically the ones who started this kind of lifestyle. Now people like myself who are in their 20's are looking to push the limits of human longevity even more. In time we'll see if it was all worth it. I have placed my bets on that it will work, and it will work very well... especially for those that started from a young age.

Matt, thanks for your post. I imagine it actually takes quite a bit of courage to practice CR.
When you are going in the complete opposite direction of all those around you, even with the science and results on your side, you must question yourself at times.
Since you have started so young, there really is the possibility you may live to 120. It's really got to make your head spin.
I'm not anything like you, but I practice a vegan diet. My health is pretty good, especially compared to those around me. I've got to tell you, sometimes I'm flabergasted how I can be considered unhealthy, while others that criticize me are well over 250-300 pounds with lots of health issues.
And, do you ever wonder why it's you, and not others around you who has the courage and discipline to pursue this lifestyle?
Keep it up young man, in anything the cream always rises to the top, and I'm sure the rest of the world will be hearing about you.
I guess being criticized for a low weight can also be an opportunity to discuss CR with someone who isn't enlightened about it, which may not only silence a critic, but recruit a potential practitioner and ally!
I didn't really get why people cared at all about other people's assessment of CR (which I just talked about in my most recent post), but then I saw that you weigh less than I do at a taller height, so it must be a daily thing for you, eh? Must feel like harassment after years of that. I wish people were smart enough to not be rude in general--making any kind of comment about other people's bodies should be off-limits out of a basic sense of respect and social aptitude.
Like I said before, I've been reading you for awhile, and I got the feeling that you are attuned to any criticism because your family was (is?) so unsupportive and critical. Don't let your mind hone in on other people's negative, know-nothing opinions just because your family primed your brain to consider them!
The other thing your post reminded me of was how Meredith and Paul had a CR-practicing doctor who made it past the century mark but never had an especially low BMI, even though he ate under 1000 calories per day. Maybe it's possible for you to gain weight without sacrificing the life-extending benefits of your CR if the criticism gets on your nerves. I only suggest it as a possibility because stressing about other people is no way to live--long or otherwise!
Good job. I looked at your picture comparison. You actually looked better at 17-19 than you do now. Although, you do only look 20/21, so congrats on looking younger.
Maybe I should get my bf to try CR. He's 20 but looks like he's in his fourties! He is skinny (weighs 175lbs at 6'2"). Would CR make him lose weight or would it just provide the health benefits for him? His doctor says he's underweight so weightloss would be bad for him.
Yeah maybe... thanks for the comment.
People that meet me in 'real life' think always think im around 17... but obviously everyone differs in their opinion. I've never had anyone (ever) think i was over 19 in real life.... :)
You could easily pass for 17! I like the way you eat. I eat in a very similar way, although I also like to eat beans and lentils, and fatty fish once a week. Must work as I am often mistaken for being years younger than I actually am. You seem to eat some milk products, but other than that, are you a vegetarian?
Yes I am now a vegetarian since 2007 :)
Matt, the interesting thing is that at my heaviest (169lbs due to medication) my BMI came out at "normal". If that sort of excess weight is normal - then I think we need to entirely revise what yardstick we are using to measure what is truly healthy!
You have been an inspiration.
